the wiring as would be the case whenever a short circuit occurs.
In the Chevrolet car and truck, a fuse is inserted in the lighting
circuit and stop lamp circuit. This fuse consists of a short piece
of metal or wire enclosed in a glass housing. This fuse wire will
melt before any damage is done to the wiring. The fuse is made
large enough to carry normal current but, it is small enough to
melt when the current greatly exceeds the normal value. When the
fuse melts or "blows" the circuit is opened and no more
current can flow until the fuse is replaced.
The Lighting Switch
The headlamps, parking lights, and tail lamp are controlled by
a single switch which is operated by a button at the lower left-hand
corner of theinstrument group. When this button is pulled out
to a position between the off and parking position, the generator
out-put is increased (on Master Models only). When pulled half-way
out the parking lights and tail lamp are lighted. When pulled
all the way out the headlamps and tail lamp are lighted.
The lighting switch is contained in an insulated metal case and
needs no attention or adjustment. To protect the wiring from short
circuits a small 15 ampere fuse is mounted on the back side of
the ammeter and in the stop lamp wire. Should all lights fail to
work, examine the fuses first. I t will usually be found "blown." If
one or more lamps fail to burn examine the bulbs. If these are
in good condition probably the switch contact springs have weakened
and fail to make contact.
